Tour from Verona via the Renaissance city of Mantua through the Po Valley to the Po Delta on the Adriatic. 218 kilometers through flat farmland and wetlands to the Punta Maistra lighthouse.
This route leads from Verona through the expansive Po Valley to the Adriatic coast. The start is near Verona train station, where there are motorcycle-friendly parking facilities. The first Stage leads south to Mantua, a UNESCO World Heritage city with Renaissance palaces and three artificial lakes, which is a worthwhile Stopover.
The route is flat throughout - there are no Mountain passes, no Switchbacks and no significant climbs. The Route runs mainly on country roads and minor roads through intensively used agricultural land. The road surface is generally good, but in places you can see the typical wear and tear of rural Italian roads with occasional patches. The road width varies: Away from the main links, there are narrower sections without central reservations.
After Mantua, the route continues east through the province of Rovigo. The Route crosses the Po at Occhiobello. From here, the landscape changes: the agricultural areas increasingly give way to the characteristic ambience of the Po Delta with canals, dykes and wetlands. The Po Delta Regional Park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with over 300 bird species and is considered one of the most important wetlands in Europe.
The destination Pila is a small fishing village in the municipality of Porto Tolle. Nearby is the Punta Maistra lighthouse, a 45-metre-high landmark at the mouth of the Po into the Adriatic Sea. The lighthouse can only be reached by boat, but the journey through the delta area to Pila offers impressive insights into this unique landscape between river and sea.
Traffic is moderate on the Main roads and mostly light on the side roads through the delta area. The Tour is suitable for riders who want to combine relaxed cruising through flat terrain with cultural and scenic destinations. Curve seekers and pass riders will not get their money's worth here. The best time to travel is spring or fall - in summer it can get very hot in the Po Valley and the mosquito population in the Delta region increases.
All in all, a Tourer without technical challenges, which gains its charm from the contrast between culturally and historically significant towns and the unspoiled natural environment of the Po Delta.
