From the mountains to the sea - Basilicata motorcycle tour from Potenza to Maratea

From the heights of the Lucanian mountains, this winding route leads through lonely valleys and dramatic gorges to the glittering coast of Maratea. A Tourer full of contrasts, where the mountains and the Mediterranean meet in a very small space.

This approximately 143-kilometre motorcycle tour begins in Potenza, the highest regional capital in Italy, and ends on the Tyrrhenian coast in picturesque Maratea. In between lies one of the most pristine and surprising landscapes in southern Italy - Basilicata, a region that is still largely unknown to many travelers.

The start on the outskirts of Potenza at an altitude of around 800 meters sets the tone: Up here, the air is clear, the views wide and the road pleasantly clear. Via the Sellata Pass road (SP5), the route immediately climbs up into the wooded heights of the Appennino Lucano. Dense beech forests line the road, which winds its way through the mountains in neat curves. In spring, wild orchids bloom along the roadside, in fall the foliage glows in all shades from gold to fiery red.

At Marsico Nuovo, the Agri valley opens up, one of the great river landscapes of Basilicata. Here the scenery changes: instead of dense forest, the landscape is now dominated by open hills, olive groves and small villages that have clung to the mountainsides like eagles' nests for centuries. The air smells of wild thyme and rosemary. If you pause for a moment, you will hear nothing but birdsong and the distant ringing of a church bell.

The Val d'Agri itself is a green oasis in the middle of the barren mountains. The Lago del Pertusillo reservoir shimmers turquoise between the hills - a perfect place for a short break with a view of the water. Further south, the landscape becomes wilder again. The road winds its way through the Pollino National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Italy. Here you will find ancient snakeskin pines (Pinus heldreichii) that can live for over 1000 years - living witnesses to a bygone era.

The last section of the Tourer is the most dramatic. In a series of Switchbacks and Tunnels, the road drops over 800 Elevation gains, while the Tyrrhenian Sea opens up before your eyes. The transition from the mountains to the Mediterranean is so abrupt that it seems almost unreal. Suddenly it smells of salt air and oleander, the colors change from forest green to sea blue.

Maratea itself is a jewel: the small coastal town with its white houses, hidden bays and the monumental statue of Christ on Monte San Biagio offers a worthy conclusion to a Tourer that shows the best of Basilicata in every respect - from the quiet mountains to the bright sea.
