From Perugia to Bocca Trabaria

Route details

133 km through the Umbrian-Marche Apennines with the legendary Bocca Trabaria Pass road. A route from the Umbrian capital via Gubbio to the wooded heights of the Massa Trabaria.

The Tourer starts in Perugia, the capital of Umbria, and first heads north-east through the rolling hills of the Umbrian Apennines. The first stop is Gubbio, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Italy. The 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli towers over the town, which lies on the slopes of Monte Ingino and has almost completely preserved its Gothic structure.

From Gubbio, the route continues northwards along winding side roads through wooded mountain country. Near San Giustino is the Castello Bufalini, a Renaissance fortress with an Italian garden and labyrinth, which has served as a museum since 1989. The castle was originally built as a military outpost and was converted into a noble residence in the 16th century.

The heart of the Tourer is the SS73bis over the Bocca Trabaria (1,049 m). This Mountain pass connects San Giustino in Umbria with Borgo Pace in the Marche region and is considered by motorcyclists to be one of the most technically demanding passes in central Italy. The route has around 69 Curves and Hairpins, with the Umbrian Versant starting with wider Curves and legible lines, while the descent towards Marche becomes narrower and more wooded.

The asphalt of the SS73bis is mostly well-maintained and suitable for different types of motorcycles. However, mixed traffic is to be expected on the route: As the Mountain pass is the fastest connection between northern Umbria and northern Marche, trucks and cars also use the route. Particular caution is therefore required in the narrower sections.

The Route ends at the Albergo Fonte Abeti near Borgo Pace, located at an altitude of around 910 meters near the fir forest of the same name, a protected flora area. The region is known for its truffle specialties and traditional Umbrian-Marche cuisine.
