A varied round trip through the heart of Friuli, taking you from the Canal Valley to the emerald green lakes of the Julian Alps - including the flair of the border triangle, historic fortresses and the joys of Alpine bends.
This 179-kilometre round trip through the northern Italian region of Friuli is a real insider tip for motorcyclists who want to combine winding Mountain roads with Mediterranean flair away from the well-known Alpine passes. The Tourer starts in Tavagnacco north of Udine and first leads through the picturesque Canal Valley, which separates the Carnic Alps from the Julian Alps.
After a gentle roll-in on well-maintained Country roads, the first highlight awaits you: the ride to Lago del Predil, Friuli's second largest lake. This turquoise-green glacial lake at an altitude of 969 meters is nestled between imposing rock faces and makes for a perfect photo stop. The road here leads through winding forest passages with good asphalt and moderate gradients.
The route continues towards Tarvisio, the charming border town in the border triangle of Italy, Austria and Slovenia. Here, the Italian way of life merges with Alpine down-to-earthness. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the traditional market attracts visitors with Montasio cheese and San Daniele ham. Winding side roads lead from Tarvisio to the legendary Laghi di Fusine - the White Rock Lakes. These two glacial lakes are among the most beautiful alpine lakes in Italy and reflect the mighty Mangart mountain range in their crystal-clear water in good Weather.
The return journey via Pontebba in the Kanaltal valley offers relaxed Cruiser through shady forests and past small Friulian villages. The roads here are pleasantly wide and the surface is in good condition throughout. Shortly before the finish, you pass Tricesimo with its historic castle complex - a worthy end to this tour.
The route is ideal for day trips and offers a balanced mix of relaxed descents and stimulating bends in the mountains. Traffic is pleasantly light outside the main season and the service station infrastructure is good. This Tourer impressively shows why Friuli is considered Italy's underrated motorcycling jewel.
