Thurgau lowlands and St.Gallen hills
The start is in Elgg in Zurich. Up to Mettlen, the overland roads run with long curves over the wide open spaces through Thurgau. From Mettlen onwards, the roads become a little more winding, but are still pleasant to ride. They lead past countless fields of apple trees, which blossom beautifully, especially in spring. In Zuzwil, the route (unfortunately) leads through residential areas and in Oberuzwil through the industrial area, but we were able to avoid the 30 km/h zones. From Mosnang to Oberwil it gets really hilly and winding, and from Dreien to Oberwil the winding road becomes quite narrow and no longer has a central reservation. On the way back to Elgg, it's Main roads again, with another tight combination of bends at the small Rüetschberg Pass. On really hot days, there are swimming opportunities just before the end of the Tourer at the small Bichelsee lake or a few kilometers further on at the small but lovely outdoor pool in Elgg.
The Tourer leads through smaller and larger communities and is nevertheless a beautiful and varied tour: half of it over long overland roads in the flatlands of Thurgau and the other half over winding roads over the hilly areas in St.Gallen. The roads on this Tourer are in very good condition and, apart from the mountain passages, have a central reservation throughout.
